Remember Allah in good times. He will remember you in hard times.

“When man is afflicted by a hardship, he prays to Us (at all times), when reclining or sitting or standing. But when We remove his hardship, he just takes his way as though he had never prayed to Us in any hardship that afflicted him. This is how their deeds appear beautified to the transgressors.” [Yunus:12]

In his tafseer of the above verse, Imam Alusi mentions that the ayah contains criticism for the person who leaves du’a in the state of ease and comfort, but runs to it at the time when calamity befalls him. The more appropriate state of the kamil individual is to beseech his Maula in the state of ease and discomfort because this creates greater hope of acceptance of his du’a. The imam then mentions the below hadith and says that there are many more hadith that support this theme. The translations below are approximate ones provided by Mufti Yusuf Mullan:

“Create a relationship with Allah in the state of ease. He will recognise you in the state of discomfort.”

“Supplicate to Allah on the day when you’re happy/joyful, He will respond to you on the day when you’re in discomfort.”

“Whoever is pleased with the thought of Allah responding to him at the time of calamities and hardships, that person should excessively make du’a in times of ease.” [Tirmidhi, Al-Hakim]
